Posting on multiple UsedEverywhere.com Sites

Policy change January 8th, 2008

Previously the policy was to allow sellers to only post on the one site nearest their usual residence. This kept the ads local and relevant. However, there are many cases where this might be overly restrictive:

  • The seller lives midway between two cities serviced by UsedEverywhere.com sites.
  • The seller is selling an item (like a special automobile, or recreational property) that a buyer might be willing to travel for to purchase.
  • The buyer is, in fact, willing to deal with a seller from afar.

Now we allow the buyer to decide whether they want to see ads from sellers outside their area. This is how it works:

  1. Sellers may post an ad on a site servicing a city outside their area as long as they are willing to deal with buyers from afar.
  2. These outside area sellers must choose the 'Outside Area' location when placing their ad. Failing to do so is a violation of the Terms of Use.
  3. We've provided an optional filter at the top of every listing page called 'Hide outside sellers'. Buyers who don't want to deal with sellers outside their area can choose to use this filter to hide those ads.

Sellers are advised to include an area code with their phone number in all ads.

(Anticipated) frequently asked questions:

Q. Does this allow sellers to post their ad multiple times on one site?

A. No, each item must be posted only once.

Q. Which sites may I post on?

A. You may post only on sites servicing areas within your own country, and only those areas you are willing to deal with. Be reasonable - if your item is usual (common) and heavy, don't advertise it on a site far away. Please see UsedEverywhere.com for a list of sites in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.

Q. What should I do if I encounter a seller from outside the country?

A. If you see people outside the country posting on your site, please report them (the link 'Report This Ad' is in red at the bottom of each ad after you click down to the ad).

Q. Can I automatically have my ad posted to multiple sites?

A. No, sorry, we don't have that capability right now. We have to consider how to make it convenient while at the same time discouraging abuse.

Q. Won't this make it too easy for commercial sellers to spam all the sites?

A. Well, yes, maybe. But you have the ability to easily filter out their ads with the 'Hide commercial sellers' checkbox. Its right above the 'Hide outside sellers' checkbox on every listing page.

Q. Is it now safe to send money to a seller in another city?

A. No! We still recommend that you meet the seller in person and inspect the item thoroughly before paying for it. However, we are not going to regulate how buyers and sellers deal with each other.
